Species at Risk

BC and Alberta are the only provinces in Canada that do not have protections for endangered species at risk. 84% of species at risk in BC, are at risk because of loss of habitat.  The federal Species at Risk act only applies to 10% of BC species at risk.

There are 1900 species threatened in the province of BC!

The Chilliwack River Valley is host to several species at risk:

  • Pacific Water Shrew, Northern Spotted Owl, Trowbridge’s Shrew, Pacific Giant Salamander, North Cascades Grizzly Bear, Mountain Beaver, Tall Bugbane, Cascade Parsley Fern, Cliff Paintbrush, Alpine Anemone, Phantom Orchid.

1) The Pacific WatershrewPacific Water Shrew (Sorex bendirii) a species at risk, has been cataloged near the area of the Larson’s Bench Open Pit Mine site.  Ratepayers are not aware of any inventory done at the mine site itself that would rule out this or other species at risk on the precise mine site location.
